The Anchor Bar - Buffalo NY
Stopped by the venerable Anchor Bar in midtown Buffalo early on a Sunday evening. Timing is everything; we arrived just after 5 pm on a day when the Buffalo Bills NFL football team played a home game on the afternoon. And we were seated at an open table right away. By 6:30, the place was packed - and the line-up was still building when we left.
So, about the food.
There were wings, of course. More on that in a minute.
The starter salad came with blue cheese dressing with, wait for it, large real chunks of blue cheese! Rarely found and should be savored when it is.
We also paired our wings with a small pepperoni and cheese pizza, one of the true hidden gems of the Anchor Bar. Tons of tasty, stretchy cheese, generously topped with pepperoni and featuring homemade sweet tomato sauce. Simply splendid!
Fortunately, we saved room for wings and they did not disappoint. Nicely sized. Perfect crispness on the outside and tender goodness on the inside. Coated with one of the best wing sauces in the business. If only they had been double-tossed, to add a bit more generous coating - we would have had the first three and a half drummie rating in our storied wing blog's history. Nonetheless, these tasties from the home of the Buffalo Chicken Wing clocked in at a solid three dummies.
